IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) has been in existence since the 1990’s. Native CAD files can be translated to IGES format and the benefit is - this necessitates only 1 translation.
STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product model data) has been in existence too for about two decades, however, it has gone through continual changes or improvements.
While there might be gaps in translation and some part may be missing during translation to IGES, STEP is a more mature format and Solid. It is extensively used in construction industry.
